What’s a good telescope to buy to see the stars and planets price $100-$200?

Question by kiwibaby3p: What’s a good telescope to buy to see the stars and planets price 0-0?
I recently bought a vivitar 50x/100x telescope that I found at walgreens while shopping. I wasn’t even looking for one then. Well, got it home and all I can really see out of it is the moon and a couple bright stars. It’s okay for what I paid for it $ 28….but now, I’ve kinda “outgrown” it and am looking for something that I can possibly see the other planets from. I’m looking to spend between $ 100-$ 200 or do I need to spend more? Like I said I wasn’t even planning on buying the first one, but now I’m hooked, line and sinkered! lol….Oh, yea, the only store around where I live is walmart and was looking on their website so I basically have to buy from there…thank you all for your advice!

Spend a little more and get a good telescope…NEVER buy junk from W’greens, WMart or any non-optical place, they just don’t get it.
The last 10 years we’ve see some great advances in both mirror making and design of small telescopes…Meade is one site, try also Celestron. The “Dobsonian” is not a name brand, but is a type of telescope, a certain design, that is both inexpensive and good…the “Dob” can be made in quite large aperture to allow you to see lots of stuff, yet not cost an arm. Meade has dobs starting at about $ 500

Is this a good eyepiece for my telescope?

Question by matters: Is this a good eyepiece for my telescope?
I have a zhumell perigee 100 Matsukov-Cassgrain. It has an aperture of 4″ and a focal length of 1400mm. I am looking into doing some astrophotography. I have found a Williams adapter eyepiece to fit my nikon coolpix. It has a focal length of 24mm. Is this a good match of eyepiece and telescope?

Answer by eri
A 24mm eyepiece is a good medium-range magnification – good for planets, clusters, larger galaxies, the Moon. If I only had one eyepiece to work with, I’d go with 24 or 25mm. As for the camera, hopefully this will work – but when I attached by camera (old SLR) to my old telescope, it attached directly to the back without an eyepiece. So I’m having trouble picturing this arrangement.

Nice choice on the telescope…
Zoom eyepieces are not good for celestial viewing. The 25mm eyepiece you get with the scope will be fine for now,But I suggest Getting a shorter focal
length premium eyepiece such as a 7mm or 6mm for Planets. The only mid priced eyepiece I would recommend is-

If you have the Xtra cash get the TELE-VUE

Many advanced amateur astronomers began the study of astronomy with a 60mm refractor. Meade 60mm-diameter telescopes (Models NG-60 and NGC-60) are perfectly suited for a person at an introductory level of interest. But if one’s interests are maintained, he or she may want a larger telescope, such as the Meade ETX series or DS 2000 series. Larger Meade telescopes enable the study of much greater detail in all observed celestial objects, and the ETX Astro Telescope and Model 4500 are excellent choices for the serious beginning amateur astronomer.

your looking at no less then $ 250-400
